Why Are We Creative?

Photos by Hermann Vaske, Pekka Rautionmaa, and Isabelle Furrer

As part of a personal quest of over thirty years, director Herman Vaske filmed the worldʼs most intriguing artists and thinkers - including over fifty Academy Award and Nobel Prize winners - from the fields of visual art, music, acting, philosophy, politics, business, and science. To all, he posed the seemingly simple question: “Why are you creative?”

Why are we creative? Is it in our blood? Do we do it to make ourselves immortal? Is it a reckless compulsion? Or do we simply do it to make a buck?

The answers Vaske receives are as varied and intriguing as his respondents. Why Are We Creative? is a vibrant celebration of what makes us the most fulfilled and the most human.

Featuring: David Bowie, Ai Weiwei, Björk, Wim Wenders, Philippe Starck, Yoko Ono, David Lynch, Yohji Yamamoto, Damien Hirst, Angelina Jolie, Nobuyoshi Araki, Quentin Tarantino, Bono, Nick Cave, Neo Rauch, Stephen Hawking, the Dalai Lama, Peter Ustinov, Marina Abramovic, Diane Kruger, Julian Schnabel, John Cleese, Jimmy Page, Vivienne Westwood, Takeshi Kitano, and many others.

Hermann Vaske strolls through the intellectual adventure like a child, pretending to be naive and unsuspecting, and inspiring artists to make unbelievable statements.
