Balkan Spirit

Photos by Daniel Tölke, Patricia Lewandowska, and Hermann Vaske

"Where is Balkan? This was a common joke," philosopher Slavoj Zizek states before explaining the endless borders that have been imagined to locate the Balkan area.

Filmmaker Hermann Vaske explores the creative Balkan world in the hopes of understanding the meaning of "Balkan spirit," interviewing philosopher Slavoj Žižek and various artists along the way. The term's complexity, however, becomes quickly apparent as it seems increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to define the Balkans' geographical location, people, and culture.

Indeed, contradiction, chaos, and change are at the Balkans' very core.

Featuring: Slavoj Žižek, Marina Abramovic, Angelina Jolie, Baba Zula, Dušan Makavejev, Jasmila Žbanić, Emir Kusturica, Korado Korlević, Flaka Haliti, and Eleni Angelopoulos.

PRAISE

"

A lively, colorful, freewheeling documentary. Never boring.
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"

After having seen the film you want to go there and meet those creatives, whose credo one of the artists puts in a nutshell: "If you don't go crazy here, you're not normal."
Süddeutsche Zeitung

"

A fascinating watch not just for those with an interest in the region, but anyone with an interest in culture, politics or history.
